LA Headshot Wardrobe Tips
For actor headshots, choose clothing that keeps attention on your face and supports the roles you want to be considered for. Bring a few well-fitting options, test them before your session, and discuss your choices with your photographer.
Plan Your Looks Around Your Casting
Start with the roles and settings you want your photos to suggest. A simple T-shirt, an open collar, and a jacket can each communicate a different impression without becoming a costume. Share any guidance from your agent or manager before choosing your final outfits. Begin with clothes you already feel comfortable wearing; you do not need an entirely new wardrobe.
Choose Tops That Keep Your Face in Focus
Bring several tops with different necklines, colors, and layering options. Check the fit while sitting and standing. Avoid large logos or busy patterns that compete with your expression. There is no single color that works for everyone: consider your skin tone, the background, and the mood of each look together. Choose underlayers that sit comfortably beneath your clothing and check for visible straps or bunching.
Prepare Clothes Before the Session
Follow each garment’s care instructions, remove lint, and steam or press wrinkles where appropriate. Transport clothes on hangers when possible. Bring complete outfits if the shoot may include wider portraits, rather than assuming only your shoulders will appear.
Keep Accessories Intentional
Simple accessories usually make it easier to keep attention on your eyes. If glasses or jewelry are part of your everyday appearance, bring them and discuss options with your photographer. Modeling and fashion images may call for more styling; actor headshots should still represent you clearly.
Commercial and Theatrical Wardrobe
Commercial looks often benefit from an approachable, everyday feel. Theatrical looks can suggest a more specific character or mood. Neither requires a costume, and a smile alone does not determine the category. Use clothing, expression, and lighting together to build distinct looks that still feel like you.
