Take Charge of Your Trajectory
It’s not all about waiting for your “big break” – you possess all the tools to harness your creative energy and make things truly happen in your career!
The key is to not get caught up in lofty expectations fueled by what your friends are experiencing, or what the media (or even your agent) tells you. A lot of people talk about being a “starving artist” and that living the dream is all about sacrifice and struggle – but that isn’t always necessarily true. Taking control of your finances is something that can happen alongside your journey as an artist. A key factor is discipline, adhering to a plan, and setting reasonable goals so you’re able to make positive strides to become more secure while affording to pursue your dream.
Our friends at Backstage published a great advice piece on The Starving Artist Myth, which was full of fantastic advice on stabilizing the trajectory of an actor. Among our favorite excerpts is this, from writer and founder of The Broke and Beautiful Life, Stefanie O’Connell:
My financial resolve changed my life without sacrificing a shred of my passion, and I know that pursued responsibly, financial education has the power to do that for every one of my fellow artists. But the shift must start with belief. Belief that the “starving artist status quo” is indeed a myth, belief that finances can be a force for good, and belief that artists can and should thrive.
The dream is certainly in reach, and so is the concept of achieving stability and financial comfort. It’s all about discipline! Get out there, take charge of your trajectory, and make it happen. We believe in you.
