Taking an acting class, joining an improv troupe, practicing stand-up, and working with new material are all the logical ways to learn more about authenticity, comedy/drama technique, and emotional interpretation – but remember that learning doesn’t stop outside the classroom!

You have access to plenty of resources in the real world that can help you become a better, stronger, more authentic actor. Part of your job is knowing all about how people genuinely speak to each other, how different personalities translate and interact, and how people react in a multitude of situations. Honing this knowledge is all about the sport of PEOPLE WATCHING – and it will do you incredible favors as a professional emotional athlete. Here are 5 places that will provide you with a broad spectrum of material to work with and learn from – happy people watching! Stay sly, remain observant, make mental notes – always keep an open mind.

1. AIRPORTS
You will see people in a rush, tired, cranky, stressed out, excited, and from ALL over the world. Next time you’re traveling, take some time to really pay attention to the people around you, focusing on how they talk, how they act in certain situations, how they navigate conversations, the cadence of their speaking.

2. SHOPPING MALLS
Another great people-watching place. You see people in a predominantly happy element – spending money, buying things they want, interacting with friends/family/sales staff.

3. COFFEE SHOPS
Another great place to people watch – as you’ll see how people interact in meetings, on dates, meeting old friends, and in a work environment. Use the time to observe the subtleties in communication. Body language!

4. THE BEACH AND/OR THE GYM
This one is tricky, because you don’t want to creep on people who are working out or trying to get a tan. It’s a little weird. Use this as mostly a listening exercise – hear how people communicate when they’re in an element of relaxation or focus. It may help you in appearing more authentic when it comes to your next role!
