The Oscars Hits & Misses
We would like to thank the Academy… for a good show. It was a damn good year for cinema. This year’s Oscars were simply fantastic — here are our favorite moments and not-so-favorite moments of the night.
HIT
The films tied with the most nominations (9) also ended up tying for the most wins (4) – and we couldn’t be happier. The Grand Budapest Hotel took home all the art and design related awards (Best Production Design, Best Hair & Makeup, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design) while the Birdman team snagged the big storytelling awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography). We are huge fans of both Wes Anderson and Alejandro González Iñárritu so it was a good night. The accolades attributed to these masterpieces were boldly earned.
MISS
John Travolta was awkward and creepy the whole night. Even when he was making jokes at his own expense, WHY does he have to touch everyone’s faces? Weird. That pretty much sums it up.
HIT
Patricia Arquette’s acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress (Boyhood) ended with a battle cry for action in favor of women’s rights and equal pay. THEN MERYL STREEP AND J.LO REACTED IN THE SASSIEST, MOST SUPPORTIVE WAY – hardcore clapping, screaming, pointing, everything. We can’t get over it. Just in case you were wondering what the actual theory of everything is:
{Jenny from the Block + Meryl Streep + gender equality + saucy attitude = EVERYTHING}

MISS
Foreigners did NOT respect the ‘Wrap Up’ Music and just kept on pushing on in their acceptance speeches, thanking everyone and their dog. No, literally. One guy actually thanked his dog, Larry. It was awesome. CLICK HERE to see all the best acceptance speeches of the night!
HIT
18 of our 24 predictions were CORRECT! Seriously, we could have entered in a pool and won like 50 bucks, man. Not to say our guesses lacked merit, but this WAS the most predictable Oscars in a decade. Why? Because all the winners were bar none. Julianne Moore (Still Alice) and Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) won Best Actress and Actor respectively, and JK Simmons (Whiplash) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) won Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress. Everyone in the entire universe predicted they would win, because, you know – merit.
SEMI-MISS
Virunga did not win Best Documentary Feature, and we were pretty bummed; CitizenFour ended up taking home the win. But let’s be real for a minute: All these documentary filmmakers are powerful, artistic humanitarians and deserve all the praise in the world for what they contribute to cinema and the global community at large. Bravo. We’re pretty big fans of people who strive to tell raw, authentic stories and change the world. If you’re interested, VIRUNGA is an incredible true story of a group of brave individuals risking their lives to save Africa’s oldest national park from destruction by big oil companies, in addition to protecting some of the most endangered species in the war-torn Congo, terrorized by rebel groups. The film is available to stream on Netflix – definitely check it out.
HIT
Lady Gaga’s incredible tribute to The Sound of Music had everyone’s jaws on the floor. Not only did she show up looking gorgeous – and NORMAL – when she opened her mouth, BEAUTIFUL, MAGICAL sounds came out and she made Julie Andrews cry. They hugged it out and had a moment afterwards, and the whole world gushed. Too much! It’s too much. We can’t handle it.
MISS
Jared Leto = trendy awards show Jesus.
HIT
Oprah’s face when she received a Lego Oscar during the performance of “Everything Is Awesome” by Tegan + Sara and The Lonely Island. It appeared to be the most exciting moment of her entire life.
MISS
Joan Rivers was left out of The Oscars ‘In Memoriam’ tribute… not like she hosted their red carpet event for the past 20 years! Nothing to see here.
HIT
Everyone at the Oscars drowned because John Legend and Common’s beautiful performance of “Glory” filled the entire Dolby Theater with tears. Chris Pine, Oprah – EVERYONE was crying hardcore. Us, too. We trying to track down the Guinness Book of World Records so they can mark down the Largest Sob Fest in the world.
Congrats to all winners, nominees, and people who got to sit next to Oprah. Until next time! It’s going to be another good year for motion pictures.
