Everybody functions with their own unique brand of humor – influenced by their personal experiences, their favorite movies, their families and friends, and their backgrounds. As actors, especially those focused in the comedy genre, you bring that unique perspective with you and it shapes how you deliver comedic scenes and roles. Having a good or different sense of humor isn’t all it takes for the mastery of comedy. There’s so much more to take into consideration such as timing, practice, education (better be watching TONS of TV & films!), and networking. You have to view your sense of humor as a muscle – it’s only as strong as you exercise it to be. It’s only as in-shape as you want it to be. Comedy is constantly evolving and shifting with society, and as long as you’re always practicing and learning, your’e always growing and riding the wave.download full film The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies 2014

Our friends at Backstage published a fantastic article on the mastery of humor and what it can do for your career as a comedy actor. Our favorite excerpt from Being Funny Is More Than Timing:

You must draw material from your everyday life, which means you have to actually have an interesting and rich life. Or you have to have a specific twist on your perspective on life that people can relate to and find humorous. For some, this is an innate talent—or they make it look that way. For most comedians and actors, along with the rest of us mere mortals, you can’t just wave a wand over your head and become a comedian. Learning your craft and growing is a lifelong job.
