MRP PICKS: Holiday Films
With five days til Christmas and just a few days left in 2015, we hope you’re all in great spirits as the year comes to a close! For us, there’s nothing like a good holiday movie to get us in the spirit. Whether they’re classics, new ones, or films that have nothing to do with the holidays and just FEEL right… they definitely help create the jovial spirit of the season. Here’s a countdown of our favorite holiday films to get you in the spirit!
5. A Christmas Story
You’ll shoot your eye out! This classic is all about the holiday woes but presents them in a heartwarming light. Definitely one of our all-time favorites, even today.
4. ELF
SANTA’S COMING! Will Ferrell totally owns this role as Buddy the Elf, which makes this one of our Top 5 favorite holiday movies. How someone so burly, caustic, over-the-top, and crazy can accomplish such a bubbly and sugary sweet role like this is just mind-blowing to us. Nonetheless, this holiday movie is iconic!
3. The Holiday
Much like the tone of Brigitte Jones’ Diary, this film seems like a bit of a downer at first, but it’s actually a sincere account of a twisted dual love story that sheds light on a different holiday experience. With a star studded cast, great writing, and stellar performances by all, this secures the #3 spot for one of our all-time favorites.
2. Love, Actually
Love, Actually has… actually… probably become a Christmas classic in its own right. With the main theme being LOVE, this movie makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside – even if it does encompass off topics like stealing your best friend’s wife and falling in love with someone with whom you don’t speak the same language. DISREGARD the weird plot holes and shaky moral ground, and you’ve got yourself a fantastic feel-good holiday film!
1. Home Alone
Home Alone is our all-time favorite holiday film because it captures the perfect essence of Christmas: togetherness, chaos, celebration, mayhem, comedy, and nostalgia. Macaulay Culkin may be a terrifying shell of himself nowadays, but damn he was a cute kid back in the 90s! This is a must-watch every year.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Harry Potter Movies
There are parts of these movies that cover Christmastime, but this isn’t why it made the list. The holidays are all about down time and togetherness, and sometimes that means binge-watching a good movie series, or television show. Harry Potter is WAY up there, because the story is outstanding, it is packed with a decade worth of nostalgia, and there’s just something about MAGIC that is so fitting for this time of year.
Lord Of The Rings Trilogy
Another holiday favorite – this trilogy just shines through because of its whimsy and fantastical nature. Despite the fighting and the war of it all, we’d say that quite like Harry Potter, the Lord Of The Rings has a certain je ne sais quoi about it that puts you in the warm, happy holiday mood.
