GOLDEN GLOBE RECAP
Last night many actors and actresses from film and television gathered in the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards.
Hosts Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler left no Hollywood stone unturned with their opening monologue, with topics ranging from Amal Alamuddin (George Clooney’s incredibly accomplished wife) to Bill Cosby to the fiasco with “The Interview” and North Korea. If you missed their hosting last night, BuzzFeed has a rundown of their best jokes of the night.
We also witnessed (a presumably very drunk) Ricky Gervais mispronounce Quvenzhané Wallis’s name when listing nominees. Immediately after he joked about pulling a “John Travolta”. Poor taste on multiple levels, especially considering Quvenzhané has been consistently told her name is ridiculous, too complicated and even being told by reporters that they would just call her ‘Annie’ because it was easier for them, essentially taking her identity from her because they don’t like learning to pronounce it.
Other important moments include “Transparent”s Jeffrey Tambor and Jill Soloway dedicating the show’s awards to the transgender community and the late Leelah Alcorn as well as John Legend and Common accepting Best Original Song for their work on “Glory” for the movie “Selma” (you can read Common’s powerful acceptance speech here.) Many actors also showed or spoke of their support for the French satirical newspaper “Charlie Hebdo” either in their speeches or with pins on their clothing reading “Je suis Charlie.”
