Getting Your Foot In the Door
Getting noticed can be one of the most challenging parts of launching your acting career – and it just so happens to be a part of every step.
Part of being an actor is also being a JUGGLER; you are constantly multitasking and pouring your energy into getting representation, booking gigs, developing your craft, paying bills, satisfying your managers (if you’re not looking for one!), and – oh yeah, almost forgot – HAVING FUN and staying passionate about it all. Don’t fret – you’re not alone. As you’re aware, you are in a giant sea full of ambitious fish such as yourselves who are experiencing the same roadblocks, juggling the same bowling balls, overwhelmed by the same process. Everyone is trying to reach the sun – they all just have different trajectories. Some will give up mid-flight, some will persist through the clouds and stardust. Few will get there. Persistence, patience, and lightheartedness are key.
As you ALWAYS hear in Hollywood “it’s all about who you know” or “you just have to get your foot in the door” – but there’s more than one way to skin the proberial cat (sorry cat lovers)! Two young actors/musical theatre performers who attended Backstage University classes, Kate Moore and Tim Wessel, opened up to BACKSTAGE about their experience in getting their foot through the door. Check out the article HERE. Our favorite excerpt:
Wessel adds, “The biggest benefit of working with an agent is probably being able to show up at an audition at an appointed time and not have to wait in line all morning with no guarantee of getting seen. Since I started working with Zane, the way I audition has totally changed. He got me several appointments for auditions that I may not have even been able to audition for otherwise.”
Read the article for more perspective – but the main point is this: Fight the good fight. Don’t have expectations – just work hard and enjoy the ride. In the wise words of Dory – “Just keep swimming!”
