FREE SCRIPTS FOR YOU TO PRACTICE WITH
It’s that time of year when scripts to major features are being released for free! Here’s how you can make those work to your advantage!
A good way to practice your acting (and script reading) skills is to read the free scripts that are released of current blockbuster hits. They give you a chance to experience a screenplay that is considered successful and high quality in terms of the writing. It’s especially great if you haven’t had an opportunity to read this kind of work yet in your career.
If you’re having some trouble with the scripts or getting a feel for a particular character, take a look at Stephen Tobolowsky’s article on how to read scripts. There’s more to it than you might realize at first!
You can also challenge yourself by reading the script before seeing the movie. Go all out when reading it, even record yourself if you feel so inclined. Then go to the movies and see the film to help you reflect: What did you bring to the role compared to the actor on the screen? How did you read the stage directions and what happened on the screen? (Usually the released script is the final version and is very inline with what’s happening in the final cut.)
On IndieWire you can find scripts for “Boyhood” (Richard Linklater), “Box Trolls” (Irena Brignull and Adam Pava–based on the book “Here Be Monsters” by Alan Snow), “The Fault in Our Stars” (Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber–based on the novel by John Green), “Gone Girl” (Gillian Flynn–based on the novel by Gillian Flynn) and more.
And keep your eyes peeled once we get closer to Oscars; more are sure to be released as the nominees are announced.
