SOCIAL MEDIA: GOOD OR EVIL?
The movie industry has a history of mocking popular technology. Social media just happens to be the latest victim. But movies like “Earth to Echo” and “Chef” hope to shed a more positive light on teenagers and their tech.
With so many movies based around the awful things that can occur online (most recently, “Men, Women and Children”) or the self-absorption that comes with owning an iPhone under the age of 30, it’s hard to take Millennials seriously. Thankfully some films are finally getting the hint that social media is not inherently negative, nor should we so easily dismiss those who are always connected.
“Earth to Echo” provides a fresh look at a generation who is facing the same problems coming-of-age teens have always faced, just with the added advantage of being digital natives. The film takes notes from its well-known predecessors such as “Stand By Me” and “The Sandlot” and integrates those story lines and characters into a new era of technology and connectivity. Jon Favreau’s “Chef” also casts a positive light on twitter and the kids who use it. “Chef” lead Carl Casper decides on a whim to start a food truck after leaving his monotonous position of head chef at an aging restaurant. Without his son, Percy, navigating the internet and sending out geo-tagged tweets, the food truck would surely never gain the level of popularity it does.
In short: you need social media, especially if you’re trying to market yourself. Being connected is essential today.
