Today is Father’s Day, so if you haven’t already forgotten, take this as your reminder to give good ol’ Dad a call. Here’s a look at some of the best (and worst) Dads on film, and whether or not they are good choices to watch with Dad today.

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS (2014)

Sam Trammel plays the father to Shailene Woodley in the romantic cancer drama, in theaters now. He is the strong father figure that tries to hold the family together while also cracking witty jokes about kicking his daughter out on the street. Would I see this one in theaters with my father? Probably not, unless I wanted my father to see me after I’ve cried myself into oblivion.

THE DESCENDANTS (2011)

George Clooney plays Matt King, a land baron who tries to reconnect with his daughters after his wife lands in a coma from a jetski accident. This is one of my favorite Clooney roles because he goes from distant father, to betrayed lover, to great father all in the span of 115 minutes. Would I watch this one with Dad? Sure, it has beautiful Hawaiian scenery and all Dads seem to be down with George Clooney.

MRS. DOUBTFIRE (1993)

MrsDoubtfire

It’s easy to forget that, at it’s core, Mrs. Doubtfire is about a father (played by Robin Williams) who dresses as an old British nanny in order to gain access into his estranged wife’s household, to be closer to his children that he isn’t legally allowed to see. Of course, on screen this plays out and seems to make him the best dad ever, but if it happened in real life I wouldn’t be so sure. Would I watch this with my Dad? My Dad would probably slap me across my face if I told him our plans for Father’s Day included watching this movie. Ah, Fatherly love.

STAR WARS TRILOGY

darth-vader-3

One of the most famous on screen father son relationships develops in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) when Darth Vader cuts off Luke Skywalker’s hand and then reveals he is his father. This famous movie moment resonated with teens everywhere who had the experience of their dads threatening to cut their hands off after breaking the curfew or taking the car without permission. Would I watch it with Dad? Maybe, but this trilogy is kind of a commitment to sit indoors all day.

INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (1989)

One of my Dad’s favorite films is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where Sean Connery plays Dr. Jones Sr. and provides the film with many of its witty lines and perfectly timed comic relief. A good lesson in the trials and tribulations of pursuing the Holy Grail with your father by your side. Would I watch this movie with my Dad? He would already have it playing on the TV, and since it is Father’s Day, I don’t have a choice.
