Honing Your Craft
In the hustle of this town, it can sometimes be hard to feel inspired to explore your career outside the confines of basic training.
Actors – especially those who have been in the game for a few years – constantly fall victim to outside pressure and stress, which can put a damper on your creative process. As we always say, the best way to hone your craft is to stay inspired by taking time each day to practice, prepare, meditate, and create. If you’re not in an improv or workshop class, oftentimes a fast-track way to productivity is to create and produce your own content; it keeps the creativity flowing and exercises your inspiration.
Our friends at Backstage have created a great list of tips to re-calibrate your creative path and take charge of your career during a lull. Here’s the basic breakdown:
- Invest in taking an improv class. Improv can prepare you for the unexpected, and it keeps your creativity flowing.
- Aim to entertain. Entertainment is a facet of the craft that often gets neglected; it’s a different side of art, but it makes you memorable and keeps you passionate.
- Control the feel of the room. Present yourself with the correct authority and energy. Convince people that they’re in good hands.
- Be aware of your type. Type determines what you become known for and how others identify you at face value. Know your presence, accentuate your strengths.
- Network with the right people. Be aware of the type of contacts you’re keeping. Keep your feelers out there, but make sure to place extra focus on those who can propel you forward. Help each other! Put it this way: Are you going to spend time speaking to other job candidates or would you prefer to speak to the hiring manager?
