There’s no doubt that Wes Anderson has figured out his style–you can spot it from a mile away: the symmetry, tracking shots, and distinct color palettes. But what brings his world to life more than anything is his actors.

Generally Anderson has a small arsenal of familiar actors who regularly show up in his work in very unlikely ways. But woven into this cast of all-stars are complete new-comers who also manage to capture the feelings of nostalgia and sadness in his work just as much as Bill Murray or Jason Schwartzman.

So how exactly does one become part of this world if you’re not already part of that troupe of regulars? Backstage’s Jack Smart interviewed Douglas Aibel, who cast previous Anderson films. Aibel explains how he and his team go about finding the perfect fit for the Wes Anderson universe.

They ditch the notion of traditional casting and cast their net far and wide to ensure they’ve found the exact person they’re looking for. The role of Zero Moustafa in Anderson’s most recent film (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”) was discovered through YouTube.

It is yet another reminder for actors to keep themselves relevant on social media. If you have accounts on different sites, make sure to update them. Keep your person website up to date and easy to navigate. If you’re worried about questionable content or feel these accounts would be an invasion of privacy, create two separate accounts: personal and professional, and keep the professional one open to the public. If someone goes to view your profile on Instagram and it’s set to private, what would give them any motivation to ‘request’ you? Making yourself accessible is part of the battle.
