MRP SPOTLIGHT: Ban The Trap
We had the opportunity to shoot a billboard campaign for the activism organization, SCIL (Social Compassion in Legislation). The billboards have been all over the news for the past couple weeks, so they certainly garnered the attention as intended! This hot-button cause was known as Ban The Trap; the mission was geared towards getting legal support for a full-on ban on all bobcat trapping, which has been a prevalent issue here in Southern California.
We’re very excited to announce that this past Wednesday, August 5, 2015, the California Fish & Game Commission voted 3-2 in favor of a STATEWIDE BAN ON BOBCAT TRAPPING! The billboard campaign was a success! Commissioners and Californians saw them and took action. The tweets, emails and phone calls poured into the Commission’s office, just as SCIL imagined and hoped they would. The billboards were a huge stride in creating awareness for the cause, and the social media activism played a huge part as well.
A great article appeared in the LA TIMES regarding the victory. An official quote from SCIL President, Judie Mancuso:
When we arrived at the Commission hearing, SCIL was greeted to thanks and hugs from animal welfare and environmental groups from all around the state. They saw the billboards and our press release, and shared with us their appreciation for our outreach efforts. They felt the billboards made a big difference. We also appreciate their work and dedication to the issue as well, and it was great to meet everyone in beautiful Fortuna.
There were over 100 speakers and all but a handful were in support of the ban. It was a large gathering of compassionate Californians and we were happy to be there with them to speak out against bobcat trapping.
We are so honored to have been included in this powerful campaign, and we’re thrilled that the billboards made a difference in saving the lives of our native Southern California bobcats. An all around victory, all for a wonderful cause.
