Do you ever feel like you are giving a killer audition, until something puts you “in your head?” Do you ever hear artists talking about getting out of their left brain and into their right brain? Well, we’re all kind of saying the same thing!

Our analytical, left brains are great for acting homework – AKA that stuff we do to prepare before our audition. The research, text analysis, and character study we need prior to performing requires our left brain’s logical, linguistic power. But once we are in the room, all that needs to be let go in order for our more creative, right brains to take over and play!

Here are some quick ways to get make sure BOTH sides of your brain are activated and ready… If you’re feeling fancy, call these your Lateralization Warm Ups!

1. Double Doodle – Sketch with both hands at the bottom of your audition sides.
2. Lazy Eight’s – Draw horizontal eights in the air with your hands as you sit and wait.
3. Cross Crawls – Alternate moving your arms and opposite legs. This is a favorite yoga move and warm up of mine!

And here is a quick test you can take yourself to get into your creative right brain before rehearsal or an audition!

Have fun “getting out of your head” and into that right brain!
