Everybody hits a lull in their career, especially in an industry like film and television. Sometimes it’s just down season, and sometimes it’s because you haven’t popped up recently and reminded them that you’re still there and ready for your next project!

Gwyn Gilliss from Backstage has some solid ideas to help you cook up some work when you seem to be stuck in a rut. She gives some suggestions of projects that will get you calls and representation. And you never know which of these little projects can lead to a big break! There are quite a few shows on Comedy Central that started off as web series on YouTube and were picked up by the channel. “Broad City” and “Drunk History” both started off as YouTube series and are now in their second and third seasons (not including the episodes that started online).

This is also a good reminder to have an active social media system in place! If you’re on social media (and if not, you should fix that!), make sure you’re connected with people you’ve worked with and update regularly so they are always reminded of you. Keeping your online presence is incredibly helpful in marketing yourself.
